2022 Annual Report

Textured black backround

It takes more than librarians and books to make a library run.

It takes you.

How do you get a group of teenagers, like the young library patrons

on our cover, actively engaged in their world on a summer night

before the start of the school year? A bonfire. S’mores. Some

animal pelts. And the coordinated efforts of everyone in our

Evanston Public Library community.

That’s because libraries are more than buildings with books --

they’re hubs for connecting people, ideas, and resources.

Throughout this year’s annual report, you’ll find example after

example of our partners, donors, volunteers, grantors, and other

members of our EPL community going all in on our mission:

The Evanston Public Libray aims to be the heart of our diverse

community by promoting the development of independent,

self-confident, and literate citizens, and providing equitable

access to cultural, intellectual, technological, and information

resources.

EPL finds itself in a moment of transition as we search for a new

Executive Director to chart our future course. While change can

feel unsettling, it can also present an opportunity for everyone in

our Library community to rise to the occasion and find new and

creative ways to contribute to this shared mission. Whether you

partner with us, give regularly, or simply borrow a book every now

and then, I want you to know that you play a vital role in making the

Library happen. Thank you.

As we head into our sesquicentennial in 2023, we’ll be highlighting

150 years of our connections throughout the Evanston community.

I hope you’ll join us and to find even more ways to connect to your

Library.

BUILDING A MORE INCLUSIVE LIBRARY

Where 'all in' means 'all.'

In January, the Evanston Public Library became one of the first public

libraries in the area to begin collecting data about race, ethnicity and

language spoken at home among our cardholders. This initiative, first

suggested by our Racial Equity Task Force, collects information on a voluntary

basis when residents sign up for a libary card, and helps our staff measure

whether our efforts to equitably serve residents are working.

Also this year, our collections staff continued refining its methods for ensuring

the diversity of voices and ideas represented in our collection, analyzing

the more than 265,000 books, movies and more. This data helps our staff

circulate books and materials by BIPOC creators more frequently.

In November, the Evanston Public Library officially adopted a land acknowledgment recognizing the Indigenous people who once lived and who still live in what we now call Evanston:

Before colonization and settlement by people of European descent, the place we know as Evanston was home to the Potawatomi, Odawa (Ottawa) and Ojibwe Tribes, also known as the Niswi-mishkodewinan (Council of the Three Fires), an alliance of Anishinaabeg peoples. It also served as an important crossroads and meeting place for a number of other Indigenous tribal nations, including the Ho-Chunk, Illinois, Inoka, Kickapoo, Miami, Menominee, Peoria, and Sac and Fox Nations. We acknowledge and honor the original people of this land, as well as the Indigenous people that still call this area home, and support their continued work for justice, self-determination, and sovereignty.

“It’s great for any library to show up at a community block party. But for the Evanston library to come to my block with not just one but so many books where I see myself and my community reflected, that’s amazing. Thank you.”

Our team of diverse library staff and community contributors provides families the space to help kids navigate a complex world through discussions, art and crafts, and activities to help kids identify their own feelings, learn accurate history, build bravery around difficult conversations, and celebrate their own identities.

The Blueberry Awards!

IN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE

HONORING EXCELLENCE

“This is the kind of award we should have seen a long time ago,” EPL Collections Manager Betsy Bird said in introducing the inaugual Blueberry Award. The national award honors excellent children’s literature that strengthens kids’ connections with nature and fosters a greater appreciation for our environment. The Blueberry List is divided into one overall winner and 25 Honor books, plus six Changemaker books recognized for their outstanding achievement in educating and rallying kids to contribute to the environment in ways only they can. In addition to the Blueberry Awards, our children’s librarians also curate the nationally renowned 101 Great Books for Kids list every November. You can find all our lists of recommended books at epl.org.

The next generation of makers

A makerspace is any space where you work with

physical objects to design, construct, and problem

solve to make something new. In January, EPL

was named a charter member of the New Faces

of Library Makerspaces project, a collaboration

to share ideas and grow makerspaces across the

country. The teens who hang out in our Teen Loft

get access to and instruction on everything from

sewing costumes to coding music to 3D printing

and laser cutting, sparking new interests for

everyone who walks through our doors.

As a charter member of the New Faces of Library

Makerspaces, EPL librarians mentor other libraries

across the coutry to help build their capacity to

create community-centered maker programming.

Cardboard Carnival makes

STEM all fun and games

Each year, EPL in partnership with EvanSTEM and D65 provides free, in person STEAM opportunities for 5th-8th graders across Evanston: Cardboard Carnival, the Code It Challenge, and the Film It Challenge. The three six-week series engage teens with new concepts in science and engineering, and focus on equity by providing students who are underrepresented in STEM fields with mentors, equipment and instruction they need to compete on a level playing field, thanks to the Office of the Illinois Secretary of State Project Next Generation Grant.

Never stop growing and connecting.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADULTS OF ALL AGES

In 2022, EPL added a new position designed to engage our community’s older adults. Our senior services librarian regularly visits Evanston’s facilities for low- income and disabled adults, connects them to books and other materials, and even offers tech support. Our programs to help older adults stay connected to their community, including Memory Cafe and Active Healthy Aging, have expanded thanks to a grant from the Retirement Research Foundation’s Foundation for Aging

ARTS AND LITERACY FOR ALL

In the fall, Grow/Share/Belong: Art & Reading for Adults, invited adults to engage with and create art while improving their reading and writing skills. The pilot program added to the rich social, emotional, and cultural lives of our patrons through a series of arts-integrated literacy classes that centered healing through self-expression and shared creative experiences, thanks to

a grant from Illinois Humanities.

OUR PARTNERS AMPLIFY OUR IMPACT ACROSS THE EVANSTON COMMUNITY

Each summer, our librarians bring pop-up

libraries right to your neighborhood with

storytimes, book giveaways, STEAM activities

and more to keep all ages engaged, whether

you’re spending summer at block parties or

the beach. This year, thanks to our partners at

the Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club, we gave

away 2,000 sunflower and pollinator garden

seed pods to kids in pre-K through 5th grade

as part of our STEAM activities. Annually, we

partner with more than 100 organizations

around Evanston to produce programs and

expand our reach in every neighborhood.

Light Grey Background

Our engagement librarians, alongside our community partners like Actors Gymnasium bring the library to parks, beaches, and community centers all over Evanston each summer.

Our volunteers help us do even more for Evanston

Our volunteers are an integral part of EPL’s service to the community. This year, 211 volunteers delivered books to people who couldn’t make it to the library, posted flyers around town, weeded the collection, entered data, and so much more to help make our Library run. Learn more at epl.org/volunteer.

THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS!

The Evanston Public Library has new partners in the community dedicated to supporting the Library through volunteerism, special events, and fundraising. Join the Partners of the Evanston Public Library at their regular monthly meetings to learn how you can be a part of this community-based initiative to support all we do. Learn more at epl.org/pepl.

OUR KIND OF PEPL

Financial Summary

The library depends on you, our taxpayers

WE ALL PLAY A PART AT THE

EVANSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY

Over the past century, past century and a half, the role of the public library has been to provide access to the many resources available in our community. More recenlty, EPL has pivoted to expand programs and services that address systemic barriers and ensure that everyone has equitable access to the Library’s resources. We have done this in spite of being woefully underfunded, especially when compared to our neighbors. The Evanston Public Library levies about half the tax dollars of other libraries in our area on a per capita basis.

Facing increased costs for staff and services, in 2022, the Library Board increased its budget request for the first time in three years, an increase of about $11 a year for a median home. But EPL receives far less funding than our neighboring libraries — just $93 per person in tax revenue on average. That’s less than half than that of Skokie Public Library, and almost one-third of Northbrook Public Library.

Although EPL remains poorly funded by tax dollars, we are proud to say that more than 13% of our budget comes from non-tax revenue sources

like grants and philanthropy. Thank you for your support. Regardless of whether you go above and beyond to give to the Library, you can still play an important role in enriching our Library community. Attend a program. Borrow materials. Connect with us on social media. Volunteer. Or simply drop by. Patrons, donors, volunteers — together, we are the Library.

If you are ready to give, you can donate online today at epl.org/donate, or contact Wynn Shawver,

Chief Development Officer, at (847)-448-8657.
